Fertility Health Checks

Fertility health checks are for people who are starting out on their journey to have their first baby. It is aimed at women who have been trying for less than 12 months and are under 38 years old, or less than 6 months if you are over 38.

Our fertility health checks are offered at our clinics around Hervey Bay. You do not need a referral to use this service. The main component of the fertility health check for women is the anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) test, which will include a follow-up review appointment to discuss the findings together.

What is the AMH test?

The AMH test is a blood test that enables us to measure the presence of the hormone that is closely associated with a woman’s ovarian reserve levels. The more eggs in your reserve, the greater the level of AMH will be in your blood. It is important to have a picture of this in order to make recommendations for your family planning journey.

A woman with a diminished ovarian reserve will have less fertility and will be at increased risk of miscarriage if she falls pregnant. By undergoing this test, you get an early snapshot of your fertility health. This helps inform a decision on when to start trying to get pregnant and whether it would be helpful to use fertility treatment.

The test can be carried out at any stage in the menstrual cycle and it can be a good marker for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). There is no risk to you associated with taking this test, and the results can be very helpful in planning your pregnancy.

Once the test is complete, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled. This will be the review appointment, wherein the results of the test will be discussed and we will run you through the options available to you. We also usually carry out a semen analysis for your partner to get further insight into your fertility as a couple.

Fertility Assessments

This is something Eli Waters Medical Centre recommends for people who are a little further along in their fertility journey. If you are under 38 and have been trying to conceive for more than 12 months (6 months if you are over 38) then this could be helpful for you. It is also recommended for anyone with a diagnosed fertility issue or who has already had a miscarriage.

The process includes the same checks as the fertility health test, but offers a more holistic understanding of your fertility. It will also involve a pelvic ultrasound from a highly skilled sonographer. This is an important part of the assessment because it will identify any abnormalities in the uterus. Things like fibroids or cysts can be discovered, and these can impact your fertility.

Abnormalities in the uterus can only be discovered by ultrasound and may pose a significant barrier to your fertility. Eli Waters Medical Centre always recommends this journey as part of a holistic investigation in supporting your journey towards parenthood.

Again, once the checks have been carried out, you will get a follow-up appointment to review the findings and discuss your circumstances. We will always offer a compassionate voice and advice from a position of expertise on how to make your dreams of a family come true.
